DESCRIPTION AND USE
Steamate FM1001 is a primary filming amine designed to reduce corrosion in condensate systems.
The product establishes a protective barrier on metal surfaces, thus inhibiting the corrosive effects of oxygen and carbon dioxide).
Steamate FM1001 is applied directly to the steam header for prevention of return line corrosion due to carbon dioxide and oxygen.
Corrosivity of condensate is a function of the quantity of oxygen and carbon dioxide present in the steam.
Feedwater alkalinity decomposes in the boiler to produce carbon dioxide that is evolved with the steam.
When the steam condenses, carbon dioxide gas dissolves in water to form carbonic acid. Carbonic acid promotes low pH attack of piping surfaces, resulting in damaging metal loss. Oxygen intrusion into the system is mainly through leakage in areas of vacuum condensation and at pump seals.
Control of return line corrosion can be achieved by application of filming amines. These high molecular weight, organic materials form a protective mono molecular film on the base metal of the condensate system. One end of the highly polar amine molecule attaches itself to the metal surface, while the other end provides the water-repelling barrier. The most effective filming amines are primary,straight-chained materials.
TREATMENT AND FEEDING REQUIREMENTS
Feed Steamate FM1001 continuously, directly to the steam header.
Steamate FM1001 is fed according to control procedures GE Betz establishes for specific applications. Normal feedrates are between 10 and 20 lb of product per million pounds (1 and 2 kg per 100 tonnes) of steam.
Dilute the product to 5 to 20% with warm condensate at 140° to 160°F (60° to 71°C). Do not use raw water or boiler water. Do not mix with other chemicals.
The feeding equipment should include: stainless steel tank; stainless steel agitator; stainless steel relief valve; iron piping, valves and fittings; and a pump with machined steel or cast iron liquid end and stainless steel trim. Filming amines should be fed using an injection nozzle for vapor streams.
