DMSO solvent

DMSO solvent
Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO solvent) is a sulfur-containing organic compound with the molecular formula C2H6OS. It is a colorless and odorless transparent liquid at room temperature, and is a hygroscopic flammable liquid.
DMSO solvent can be used as organic solvents, reaction media, and organic synthesis intermediates. It can also be used as a dyeing solvent, dye remover, dyeing carrier, and absorbent for recovering acetylene and sulfur dioxide in synthetic fibers.

Physical properties of DMSO solvent
Colorless viscous liquid. Flammable, almost odorless, with a bitter taste, and hygroscopic. Except for petroleum ether, it can dissolve general organic solvents. Can be miscible with water, ethanol, acetone, acetaldehyde, pyridine, ethyl acetate, dibutyl phthalate, dioxane, and aromatic compounds, but insoluble in fatty hydrocarbon compounds other than acetylene. It has strong hygroscopicity and can absorb 70% of its own weight of moisture from the air at a relative humidity of 60% at 20 ℃. This product is a weak oxidant and does not contain water. Dimethyl sulfoxide is non corrosive to metals. When containing water, it affects iron; Copper and other metals are corrosive, but they do not corrode aluminum. Stable to alkali. Heating in the presence of acid will produce small amounts of methyl mercaptan, formaldehyde, and dimethyl sulfide; Compounds such as methanesulfonic acid. It decomposes at high temperatures and reacts violently with chlorine, burning in the air and emitting a light blue flame.
Chemical property of DMSO solvent
1 . Reduction of dimethyl sulfoxide to produce methyl sulfide. Oxidized to dimethyl sulfoxide by strong oxidizing agents;
When dimethyl sulfoxide comes into contact with acyl chlorides such as cyanuric chloride, benzoyl chloride, acetyl chloride, phenyliodoyl chloride, thionyl chloride, thionyl chloride, phosphorus trichloride, etc., it undergoes intense exothermic decomposition reactions. Combined with nitric acid, (CH3) 2SO · HNO3 is generated. Interacting with barium carbonate can regenerate dimethyl sulfoxide. Reacts with concentrated hydrogen iodate to produce dimethyl sulfide compounds.
3. Dimethyl sulfoxide has water absorption and needs to be dried before use.
